Over centuries, the Scourge has evolved from a demonic creation into an independent force with its own twisted agenda. Originally forged when Kil'jaeden trapped Ner'zhul's soul within the Frozen Throne to serve as a vanguard for the Burning Legion, it was later manipulated by Arthas Menethil after he merged with the Lich King. While initially used to pave the way for the Legion's return, the Lich King eventually sought only the preservation of his own power and the expansion of his undead dominion. The rise of the Forsaken, led by Sylvanas Windrunner, marked a significant fracture in the Scourge as she liberated her people from the Lich King's control. However, even after Arthas's fall at the hands of the Alliance and Horde heroes, the shadow of the Scourge remains, with the curse of undeath continuing to plague the world.
