Under the combined rule of Arthas and Ner'zhul, the Scourge devastated Lordaeron and other kingdoms, raising the dead to serve an endless crusade. However, a schism eventually formed within the throne; Arthas sought total conquest while Ner'zhul desired only survival against his demonic masters. This internal conflict was exploited by the alliance of heroes from both the Horde and the Alliance, who stormed Icecrown Citadel. In a final confrontation, Arthas was defeated by his former friend Uther's successor, Tirion Fordring, breaking the bond between the two souls.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled across the frozen peaks of Icecrown, carrying whispers of agony that had echoed for centuries. Within the citadel, a figure clad in black plate and fur sat upon a throne of ice, his eyes burning with cold blue fire. He held Frostmourne, the sword that drank souls, feeling the weight of a thousand dead kings pressing against his mind. 'The Scourge shall never fall,' he whispered to the empty hall, but for the first time in an age, the voice of Ner'zhul was silent, and Arthas felt only the crushing cold of his own isolation as the final battle began.

His story is a tragic cycle of manipulation by the Burning Legion, who used him to weaken mortal races without committing their own forces directly. Initially, Ner'zhul was forced into this role against his will, but he eventually embraced his power. The arrival of Arthas Menethil marked a turning point, as the human prince's ambition and grief made him the perfect vessel for the Lich King's dark will. Together, they orchestrated the fall of Lordaeron and the spread of the Plague. The eventual defeat of the Lich King required a united front between warring factions. The death of Arthas did not immediately end the threat; Ner'zhul's spirit remained until the heroes finally shattered the Frozen Throne itself, ending the reign of terror that had plagued Northrend for generations.

• The Lich King was originally created by the Burning Legion as a failsafe to prevent their own invasion of Azeroth if they were defeated elsewhere.
• Arthas Menethil did not immediately become the Lich King upon arriving in Northrend; he spent time as the wielder of Frostmourne before merging with Ner'zhul.
