Lore & Background

Lothar's story in the film centers on the defense of Stormwind against Gul'dan's invading Horde. He first encounters the threat when he finds mage Khadgar investigating slain men with traces of fel magic. Lothar, Khadgar, and Medivh join a scouting team following these traces but are ambushed by orcs. During this engagement, Medivh's corruption is revealed as a central plot point; he does not simply kill corrupted foes as an ally. The team captures Garona, who helps them spy on the orc camp to learn of Gul'dan's plan to bring the Horde through a portal. When Durotan secretly meets with King Llane to unite against Gul'dan, the group is ambushed by Blackhand. Later, as Medivh opens the portal for the rest of the Horde, Llane leads an assault on the orc camp while Lothar and Khadgar fight Medivh at the Tower of Karazhan to stop his corruption. After Medivh is killed by Khadgar and Lothar at Karazhan, Lothar arrives at the battlefield to retrieve King Llane's body. He is then confronted by Blackhand, and duels and kills him before departing with the king's remains. In the established game canon, Lothar is later killed by Orgrim Doomhammer at the Battle of Blackrock Spire during the Second War.

The battle for Stormwind began when Anduin Lothar discovered trespassing mage Khadgar investigating bodies that contained traces of fel magic. Joining forces with Medivh and Khadgar, Lothar led a scouting team into the wilds, only to be ambushed by orcs. During the fight, his son Callan was separated from the group and brutally killed by Blackhand, an act that would fuel Lothar's resolve for vengeance. As the war escalated, Gul'dan used fel magic to open a portal, bringing the full might of the Horde into Azeroth. King Llane led a human assault on the orc camp while Lothar engaged Medivh and destroyed the demon manifesting from the portal. With the portal closed by the dying Medivh, Lothar arrived at the battlefield to retrieve King Llane's body. There, he faced Blackhand in a Mak'gora duel. Defeating the fearsome chieftain, Lothar avenged his son and secured the king's remains. At Llane's funeral, the leaders of other human nations, high elves, and dwarves gathered to proclaim an alliance against the orcs, officially supporting Lothar as their leader.
