Lore & Background

Following the Scourge's destruction of Quel'Thalas, Kael'thas gathered survivors and renamed them blood elves. Under human general Garithos, he faced discrimination that led to his imprisonment for accepting aid from Lady Vashj and her naga. Freed by Vashj, he traveled to Outland and pledged allegiance to Illidan Stormrage in exchange for help with magical withdrawal. In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Kael'thas abandoned Illidan to serve the Burning Legion, occupying the naaru fortress Tempest Keep. He later seized the Isle of Quel'Danas to use the restored Sunwell as a portal for demon lord Kil'jaeden but was killed in Magisters' Terrace before completion. His soul now resides in Revendreth within Shadowlands, where he assists against forces exploiting his pride.

In Their Own Story

Kael'thas began as a prince and member of the Kirin Tor, returning to a shattered Quel'Thalas to lead his people through withdrawal from magic. Placed under the command of Garithos, who withheld support while assigning dangerous missions, Kael'thas accepted help from Lady Vashj. Imprisoned for treason and sentenced to death, he was freed by Vashj and led to Outland. There, he pledged himself to Illidan Stormrage. Later, his path diverged as he served the Burning Legion, using manaforges in Tempest Keep to draw energy from the Twisting Nether. After defeating players in the Eye raid wing, he attempted to summon Kil'jaeden via the Sunwell but fell in Magisters' Terrace. In Shadowlands, his soul faces rehabilitation in Revendreth while aiding the Venthyr covenant.

Reader's Guide

As a ranged assassin in Heroes of the Storm added in May 2015, Kael'thas specializes in fire magic and area damage. His kit includes Flamestrike, Living Bomb, Gravity Lapse, Phoenix, and Pyroblast. The Verdant Spheres mechanic, changed from passive to activated during playtesting, allows players to empower basic abilities. Developers John Hodgson and Kent-Erik Hagman adjusted Phoenix from an egg-hatching or companion version to a battlefield-crossing damage dealer to ensure scale. Pyroblast was restricted from targeting ordinary minions to prevent accidental selection. Originally voiced by Quinton Flynn since Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, his dialogue was re-recorded in 2021 for patch 9.1 with an unannounced replacement actor.
