Malfurion Stormrage was born before the War of the Ancients, a conflict that erupted over 10,000 years prior to the Third War. During this era, he worked alongside his brother Illidan and Tyrande Whisperwind against the Burning Legion. When Illidan made a pact with the Legion to secure Sargeras' entrance into Azeroth, Malfurion's efforts disrupted the plot, leading him to assist in the demons' defeat. In the aftermath of these events, after Illidan recreated the destroyed Well of Eternity, Malfurion imprisoned his brother for thousands of years. During the Third War, Tyrande released Illidan from this millennia-long imprisonment, hoping he would redeem himself by battling a returned Burning Legion.
