Vale of Eternal Sorrows

A necrotic graveyard in Kalimdor where the dead walk and the Forsaken claim their dominion.

The Vale of Eternal Sorrows is a hauntingly beautiful region located in central Kalimdor, serving as the primary homeland of the Forsaken Scourge remnants and the newly risen undead. Once a peaceful grazing land for the tauren and their allies, it was transformed into a necrotic wasteland during the Third War when Arthas Menethil's forces slaughtered the local population to create a foothold for the Scourge in Azeroth.

Lore & Background

Following the defeat of the Lich King's initial invasion force and the subsequent rise of Sylvanas Windrunner, the region became a contested zone. The Forsaken, seeking a new home after being cast out of Lordaeron, reclaimed these cursed lands, turning them into a strategic stronghold. Today, the Vale remains a place where the past is never truly buried; ancient spirits linger in the mist, and the ground itself seems to weep for the souls lost during the Scourge's rampage.

In Their Own Story

The fog clings low to the cracked earth of Deathknell, smelling faintly of wet rot and old iron. A lone Forsaken sentinel patrols the graveyard, his skeletal fingers tightening around a rusted scythe as he scans the horizon. In the distance, the wind howls through the broken crypts, carrying whispers that sound suspiciously like the final pleas of those who died here centuries ago. He does not flinch; to him, these are not ghosts, but neighbors waiting for their turn to rise.

Reader's Guide

The Vale is defined by its eerie atmosphere and necrotic terrain, dominated by the graveyard town of Deathknell, which serves as a central hub for Forsaken operations and a primary questing area. To the north lies the ominous presence of the Scourge remnants, while the southern edges border the more natural, though still tainted, landscapes of the Barrens. Key landmarks include the crumbling crypts filled with restless spirits and the fortified walls of Deathknell, which stand as a testament to the Forsaken's resilience. The ecology here is twisted; normal flora has been replaced by sickly gray grasses and twisted trees that seem to bleed sap like blood. Narratively, the region acts as a bridge between the living world and the realm of death, often serving as an introduction for players to the darker aspects of the Horde's history. It is a place where the battle between life and undeath plays out daily.
